Carry the Word Close to Your Heart

Carry the Word Close to Your Heart

Better in Black is proud to present (once again), your weekly dose of independent inspiration!  We are working hard to provide you, our fans and followers, with a weekly story about an independent artist or designer who took the inspiration provided to them by Cassandra Clare’s stories and turned it into an original piece of art available to fans!  This week, we’d like to present Jennie Wroubel from ArtsyJennie Designs (http://www.etsy.com/shop/ArtsyJennieDesigns?ref=seller_info)!

Jennie has taken her love of the books and, quite literally, shrunken it down to size!  These beautiful pendants allow any shadowhunter to carry their love for the Mortal Instruments close to there heart on a necklace or as dainty earrings.  Either way, you can have one, or all, of your favorite books with you!

Let’s start with the basics:

What or who got you into The Mortal Instruments Series?

I got into the Mortal Instrument series by happenstance eight months ago. I was looking for a good Steampunk-styled book and came across ‘The Infernal Devices’ and I started looking into reading it and saw people were saying you had to read ‘The Mortal Instruments’ first and I was hooked after two chapters into ‘City of Bones’ I realized that I didn’t want a Steampunk book, I wanted a book about half-angel – half-human people running around saving the world! I was a Shadowhunter by heart immediatey and I knew this was going to be a passion for me.

When did you realize this was more than “just another book”?

The introduction to the institute and what Nephilim were. I have always been a Harry Potter/Fantasy fan and upon reading TMI I realized that whereas Harry Potter was a book I read when I was younger that the TMI young adult book was perfect for a growing fan of that series. It has the action, suspense, and curiousity the first few pages in.

Why create jewelry based, literally, on the books?

I started an etsy store a little while ago wanting to sell my Steampunk-inspired hair accessories, but I also make jewelry. I thought ‘I don’t want to sell jewelry that looks like everyone elses jewelry. I would rather make something personal that I myself would want to wear all the time’. At this point I was reading ‘City of Ashes’ and I knew then that I wanted to make tiny TMI & TID books…

Screen shot 2013-06-12 at 5.15.30 PM

When did you decide to share your designs with others?

It took me a week to figure out how I was going to make the charms. After many failures I figured out how to make a sturdy, reliable charm that would resemble the book and look great! Once I had that figured out I started a test market with my friends. I realized I loved wearing them because the minute my friends saw them, if they don’t know what TMI was, it gaves me the chance to engage into conversation and share in my love of the series…and I have created some new fans this way.

Serious Stuff:

What would you like to say to your customers/fans?

I am so happy that you like these charms and I am in the process of expanding my books to other fandoms, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Divergent, Vampire Diaries, Twilight, Fifty Shades of Grey (and many, many, more!) I am even going to be making book charm bracelets! Keychains! (I am open to suggestions!). I even have some jewelry to be inspired by ‘The Infernal Devices’ on the way!

You have several items, some TMI related, some not.  What inspires these designs?

I love the steampunk look and I inherited some old costume jewelry from my late grandmother than has no heartfelt value so I started making some hair clips and accessories using some of the jewelry pieces as well as steampunk gears and victorian lace. I only made a few because I felt that I wanted something easier to create with a much bigger impact. My designs themselves are inspired by colors or various things I piece together that complement each other. Let’s see what I can create next that is inspired by Will Herondale’s eyes ;)

What is your favorite thing to make?

So far, the new book charms have become a growing passion. I really enjoy having people checking out my etsy store knowing I have created something they are willing to look at. I am hoping to branch out to other mediums once I create all the book charm items I have in mind.

How long does to take you to create a piece?

So far, the new book charms have become a growing passion. I really enjoy having people checking out my etsy store knowing I have created something they are willing to look at. I am hoping to branch out to other mediums once I create all the book charm items I have in mind.

What is the most rewarding thing you’ve ever heard from a customer?

I actually haven’t had any customer’s yet, but I have had many family and friends tell me they want to put in orders so that’s got to count for something! Hopefully for those who love TMI and TID they see my designs and want one :D

Have you ever met Cassandra Clare? If you could, what would you want to say to her?  Would you create something for her?

I have never met Cassandra Clare, I did try once to get my best friend in Portland to go to one of her book signings for me and get her autograph but my friend couldn’t go during her work hours. If I could meet her I would tell her she’s an amazing author to create such sarcastic/witty characters that readers have fallen in love with *cough* Jace & William *cough*. She’s inspired me to not only create these book charms but also to start writing a book I’ve been trying to start for a while. I would create her a unique piece, something that utilizes the book charms but also the series as a whole.

Jamie Campbell Bower ^_^

The Real You:

What is a random fact people didn’t know about you?

I collect movie ticket stubs (so you know I will be framing the TMI stub :D)

What do you like to do in your free time that doesn’t involve IG, YouTube or shadow hunting?

I’m a professional graphic designer & illustrator so in my spare time I draw, or design things on the computer. I am actually the web designer for www.mysticfallstours.com which is the tour site based in Covington, GA for the Hit TV show ‘The Vampire Diaries’ so I tend to work on it in my spare time often. I also run a TMI-TID fanpage on facebook called ‘The Angelic Cup’ which I like to locate & post images and news online for the upcoming movie.

Totally Obsessed with Fandom

Better in Black is proud to present (once again), your weekly dose of independent inspiration! We are working hard to provide you, our fans and followers, with a weekly story about an independent artist or designer who took the inspiration provided to them by Cassandra Clare’s stories and turned it into an original piece of art available to fans! Cecilia Perez of Totally Obsessed was kind enough to take time from her busy crafting days to provide Better in Black with an exclusive interview!

Cecilia first appeared on our radar when Katie accidently discovered her ornaments on Etsy and bought one. “I ordered the fearless rune ornament. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but it was BEAUTIFUL! The attention to the details of the rune and the sharpness of the lines is what really impressed me. I had originally planned to just have it out for Christmas, but now it sits, constantly on display, on my desk!” Cecilia has a clear passion for her art and it shows in her dedication to bringing fans the unique, quality items they desire.

messagepart-3

Since its inception, Cecilia has been an avid supporter of Better in Black donating rune ornaments to our 100 fan and 300 fan celebrations! We cannot thank her enough! For your very own rune ornament (or any other fandom for that matter) shop Totally Obsessed on Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/shop/TotallyObsessed?ref=si_shop) and remember to “like” Totally Obsessed on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/TotallyObsessed)! Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the glamour to wear off shadowhunters, there are even more goodies headed our way soon.

messagepart-1

messagepart-2

Let’s start with the basics:

What or who got you into The Mortal Instruments Series? My sister, were always reading books. She told me read this and I did.

When did you realize this was more than “just another book”? Hmmm… actually reading them the second time around. I tend to go through books quickly, so quickly it’s like swallowing a meal whole. Your absolutely ravenous for every bite, it’s so good you can’t help it.

Serious Stuff:

When did you decide to design your own Mortal Instruments ornaments? I can’t remember actually, I’ve had them for a while. I have always had themed trees from Harry Potter to Twilight to an official “Obsessed” tree. I finally decided to put them up for sale for fellow Shadowhunters.

How did you decide which runes to do? I offer all the runes, but I personally love the fearless rune as that is me, so much of my personality is tied in with that rune, I have it tattooed on my wrist.

If you could expand upon this business (i.e. if someone offered you the chance to become a licensed merchandised item) would you take it? Yes, in a heartbeat, I have so many ideas and things I would love to do. To have my work considered an official item would be bloody amazing!

Have you met Cassandra Clare or any of the TMI Stars? No, I would love to, but I don’t get to travel much if at all. I plan on doing more trips next year, more signings and cons. I am busy through July to January, so it makes it hard to leave.

We recently saw, on Better in Black, that you intend to release a set of nail decals. Where did the inspiration for this come from? I actually was a nail tech for almost 6/7 years. It was hard for me to keep doing nails as Totally Obsessed picked up more and more. However, whenever I get a chance to do a theme for anything I’m all for it. I have done theme nails for Twilight, Hunger Games, Harry Potter etc.

messagepart

What other items do you hope to make in the future? Any sneak peeks? I hope to have tons! But some items I’m working on are champagne flute sets for weddings and glasses. Rune stockings and tree skirts are something I will carry this year as well.

What is the most rewarding thing you’ve ever heard from a fan or even someone you’ve presented a gift to?
The one that always sticks in my head is from one of my very first Twilight ornament customers, they wrote to me and they said how much they love my work, the details were amazing and I was wonderful artist. It was the first time I had ever been called an artist and to have someone label me as such was WOW, it still shocks me to be honest that anyone considers me as such.

What would you like to say to your customers/fans? Thank you! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I cannot begin to express how much their support means to me. Many do not know but I have ADD, and well obviously OCD. It can be hard for me to focus so much on tasks I do not enjoy but down right hate doing, (cough cleaning, cough laundry). I love to paint and create; reading is one of my obsessions. The fact that I get so excited I am inspired to create something I love and in turn can share it with others who will love; it just as much makes my work days so enjoyable. They allow me to share my craziness in a productive way.

TMI FUN:

Favorite character? By the angel! I have to pick one? I can’t, I love Will and Jem, their parabatai bond is exactly what me and my sister share. Isabelle is my favorite female by far, and Magnus and Alec oh where do I begin. Guess I can’t pick just one lol.

Favorite book? TMI- City of Lost Souls, TID- I’m torn as I still don’t know how to feel about Clockwork Princesses ending. But it would be a toss-up of Clockwork Prince and Clockwork Princess.

Favorite quote? Too many, anything out of Jace’s mouth is gold, he’s bloody hilarious.

Who is the actor/actress you’d most like to meet from the series? Magnus Bane, when they cast Will Herondale I will make every effort to go and meet whoever they cast!

The Real You:

Random fact people didn’t know about you:

What do you like to do in your free time that doesn’t involve sewing or designing? That’s a hard question as much of what I do on free time involves both. But when I have absolute free time, I love to write. I would love to become a published author.

Favorite color? Black , its actually been black before TMI too

Favorite food? Inn-N-Out, Chinese, can’t say that I have one.

Lifelong dream? To become an author, to write such a compelling series that overwhelms the senses, boggles the mind, and has you lay awake at night wondering why and how. To have it leak into your dreams and wake you only to finish the chapter you left off on and before you know it the sun leaks through the windows and tears stream down your face as you are left bereft, because it’s over. It’s over and your heart aches and you’re empty because a world you so love is gone, till you start it all over again.

That is the kind of author I wish to be.

A BitterSweet Story of Inspiration

Better in Black is proud to present, your weekly dose of independent inspiration! We will be working hard to provide you, our fans and followers, with a weekly story about an independent artist or designer who took the inspiration provided to them by Cassandra Clare’s stories and turned it into an original piece of art available to fans! Delilah and Natasha, creators of Bitter Sweet Stories Designs, were kind enough to take time from their busy purse making days to provide Better in Black with an exclusive interview! Needless to say, we are thrilled that they will be our very first dose of inspiration!

Delilah and Natasha met at a Twilight convention, but became best friends through their numerous passions. The one passion that they shared the most love for was The Mortal Instruments. They’ve read all the books, followed the castings and production news for 3 years, and met Mrs. Clare at a book signing on their first TMI adventure in 2011. Once production for the movie began they fangirled over the set photos which displayed the first physical embodiments of Nephilim runes and Shadowhunter attire. They love everything about Shadowhunter’s attire, whether it be the black leather or the victorian corsets, it ignited a creative fire that can’t be extinguished.

When Cassandra Clare announced the dates for her west coast tour to promote Clockwork Princess this last March, Delilah had an idea. Around the time the dates were announced, she came across Spoonflower.com which is a website that creates custom fabric. She searched their online store for Mortal Instruments fabric, but there was none to be found. To make this custom fabric she turned to her best friend, Natasha, who had a background in graphic design. Once the fabric was designed and purchased, Delilah (who graduated from FIDM with a degree in Fashion Design) got to work on her designs for both Natasha and herself, as well as a gift to give to Mrs. Clare at the signing. The designs were a hit and fueled her next projects for the actors at Wondercon. When the Festival of Books came knocking Natasha suggested that Delilah should make purses for the event. Those purses got some major attention with the help of Tatiana from City of Shadowhunters (http://cityofshadowhunters.com/), that’s when Delilah and Natasha knew this could be a business!

1

They have some plans brewing for future Shadowhunter family crest fabric, but Divergent fabric is next on the list. They are aiming to hit every fandom with its own special fabric in the future. Bitter Sweet Stories Designs, “We wish to tell your bitter sweet story. Whether it be through costumes, geek apparel, or art work – we desire to inspire ‘a little chic for the geek’ in us all.” The shop is just starting so they ask you please be patient while orders are being created.

2

Let’s start with the basics:

What or who got you into The Mortal Instruments Series?
Natasha: A Borders employee who kept seeing me wander the Young Adult section said I should try the series. Then I saw the Stephenie Meyer quote on the front and thought, “MUST READ!”
Delilah: Well, I saw an ad for The Mortal Instruments in the Us Weekly Twilight special edition with Stephenie Meyer’s quote on the cover, and thought at that point I needed to find out who this Jace was!

When did you realize this was more than “just another book”?
Natasha: One night in 2009 when I was reading I just kept thinking, “How will they make these books into movies, they are just too epic!” This was before there was even talk of the movie.
Delilah: When I couldn’t stop reading it and had to know what was next! For me it has its own signature that can’t be ignored.

Serious Stuff:

When did you decide to design your own Mortal Instruments fabric?
Delilah stumbled upon Spoonflower.com and searched their inventory for Mortal Instrument fabric, but came up empty. We decided to change that.

Who is the brain behind the fabric? The designs of the merchandise?
We both are. It’s a partnership with each of us confirming designs, with Natasha designing the fabric, and Delilah making the product.

If you could expand upon this business (ie if someone offered you the chance to become a licensed merchandised item or offered to buy rights to your fabric print) would you take it?
We’d have to see what the terms were, and how much we were offered, but HELL YEAH!

You met Cassandra Clare and other TMI Royalty recently. What was their feedback?
They all loved it! Cassandra Clare loved her scarf so much she wanted a picture of us (WE’RE ON HER PHONE!). Jaime Campbell Bower doesn’t often where ties, but he said he would because, “We are a big deal”! Kevin Zegers said his tie was really cool, and when Lily Collins lifted her blouse from its box she said, “You made this? Is this for real?” Let’s just say we were fangirling over all their feedback.

3 4

What is your favorite item to make? What do you hope to make in the future?
For Delilah, the purses are new for her, but she loves to make lots of different things. We’re hoping to have more clothing, and different fandom based fabrics!

5 6

What is the most rewarding thing you’ve ever heard from a fan or even someone you’ve presented a gift to?
Our first few customers are so rewarding to us! We’re a bit blown away from the fact that we are actually selling items, and there is a desire for our product!

What would you like to say to your customers/fans?
We hope that they continue to be satisfied with our designs and products! We love their constant enthusiasm for our purses so far!

TMI FUN:

Favorite character?
Natasha: Isabelle Lightwood all the way!!
Delilah: Do I have to pick one?! Hahaha If so I would have to say Magnus!

Favorite book?
Natasha: I’m going to say Clockwork Angel, I love those characters and the time period!
Delilah: City of Bones, cause it started the addiction!

Favorite quote?
Natasha: “I’m pure at heart. It repels the dirt.” – Isabelle Lightwood BOOM!
Delilah: Clary – “Don’t look down at me!” Jace – “ Well I could hardly look up to you!” (I feel her pain, I’m a shorty)

Who is the actor/actress you’d most like to meet from the series?
Natasha: TOO MANY! I’d love to meet Jemima West, but I don’t know what she’s like. I’d really love to meet Jamie Campbell Bower and Godfrey Gao as well.
Delilah: I’ve been VERY lucky to meet Jamie, Lily, and Kevin! Which was amazing, because they are all so nice and hoping to see them again! I’d love to meet Godfrey Gao and Robert Sheehan!

The Real You:

Random fact people didn’t know about you:
Natasha: I’m a reporter for Page to Premiere! Woohoo!
Delilah: I have three dachshunds!

What do you like to do in your free time that doesn’t involve sewing or designing?
READING! Anything that involves books – we’re on it!

Favorite color?
Natasha: Purple
Delilah: Blue

Favorite food?
Delilah: Strawberries
Natasha: Crab cakes or cheesecake! I know weird combo!

Lifelong dream?
Delilah: You want the shorthand, because I could go on and on! But mainly to be happy and healthy – I know it sounds kind of boring, but it’s the truth because you can’t do much if you aren’t happy and healthy!
Natasha: Delilah is taking the high road, but right now I have dreams of becoming a famous hair and make-up artist to the stars!

Pictures in the Shadows

Better in Black is happy to provide you with an exclusive interview! Sasha, creator and picture guru extraordinaire from @theshadowhunters on Instagram and Bookutopia on YouTube recently agreed to share her passion with us! We hope you enjoy and, keep your eyes peeled for the glamour to disappear shadowhunters … there’s a little surprise at the end!

sasha

Let’s start with the basics:

What or who got you into The Mortal Instruments Series?
It’s kind of a funny story… Whenever I went to the book store I’d see City of Bones on the shelves but I never thought to pick it up. But my friend Francesca kept insisting I read it for about four months. I finally gave in and bought it… Best decision of my life!

When did you realize this was more than “just another book”?
Probably once I finished the first chapter. From the first paragraph, I knew it was going to be an amazing book but after the first chapter, I knew it was something special.

Why start an Instagram account devoted to TMI? What was your inspiration?
At the time I had a fan page for The Hunger Games (@hungergamesfire) so I was accustomed to the “fangirl” blogging world. Once I read TMI I just knew I had to make an account for other fans just like me to go to for photos and news on the fandom. Instagram is a great way to start a fan based account. It’s a good step before branching off to websites, tumblr, twitter and YouTube. I got my inspiration from the books, cheesy as that may sound but it’s very much true.

Why start a YouTube Channel?
There are only a few people I can talk face to face about my love of books. I love watching other book-tubers and I thought “Why don’t I make videos too? I like to ramble on and on about books, this is the perfect way to do so!”. I could talk about books to a wide variety of people just like me, not exactly face to face, but close enough.

Serious Stuff:

You have a lot of followers on Instagram and YouTube, what do you credit that to?
Well for instagram, I credit my previous experience of having a fan account before my @theshadowhunters account. It helped me realize what fans want to see and what they don’t. I also couldn’t have done this without photo sharing sites like Tumblr.com and weheartit.com. For my YouTube, I credit the authors who wrote the books I talk about. Those books are what inspire me to vlog on YouTube. But I credit my followers the most because they are the ones who actually press that “follow” button.

What would you like to say to your followers/fans?
To my followers: Thank you so much for following me and for helping me make these accounts what they are today! Without you, none of this would be possible.

You post a variety of material from TMI to TID and ComicCon to Jamily. What’s your favorite thing to post?
Hmm that’s a hard one. I love posting about it all! But since I have to choose I would have to say anything TMI movie related. I just love seeing the progression of the movie and how far they have come since filming started last summer.

If you could be the first to post something exclusive, what would you want it to be and why?
The first movie clip for TMI or the casting for The Infernal Devices movie.

What is the most rewarding thing you’ve ever heard from a fan?
I’ve heard a lot of things in the previous months, and each and every one makes my day brighter, but this one fan really stood out to me. I replied to a question she had one day and right after I sent it she posted a picture of my reply to her on her TMI fanpage. She said I was her inspiration for starting a TMI fan page and I was like the angel Raziel to her. She said I have the best shadowhunter fanpage. It made me so happy and proud that I made somebody feel that way, it was an honor to be thought of in that light!

What do you gain from your dedication to you IG account and what do you hope others get from it?
I gain an understanding of people interestingly enough. What they want to see, what they respond to and what they do not. This account has been one of the most solid things throughout this wild year. I am truly dedicated with my IG account, it’s like my child in a way. I hope other will see that if they want something bad enough, they can achieve anything.

You have done some amazing trailer re-shoots on your YouTube channel and trailer still photos on your IG account. What inspired those? Did anyone help you?
Gosh! I love doing the reshoots, they are a blast! I was inspired by my followers saying how much I look like Lily Collins (Clary). It was such a compliment and it led me to want to do the reenactments as Clary. I did them mostly by myself but my father helps me sometimes. He’s actually going to be in the next one playing Hodge Starkweather!

Have you ever met Cassandra Clare? If you could, what would you want to say to her?
Sadly I haven’t, but I may be going to Comic Con: San Diego, maybe then? We’ve emailed a few times though. I told her how much her books have changed my life. I’ve made lifelong friends by having a mutual interest in TMI. They helped me get through my mother’s death and just gave me the courage to write and blog. I honestly don’t know where I would be without TMI or books in general!

TMI FUN:

Favorite character
Clary Fray. She’s just so stubborn and corky, I love it!

Favorite book?
City of Glass

Favorite quote?
If I could quote a whole book I would but I cant so…
“Is this the part where you start tearing off strips of your shirt to bind my wounds?”
“If you wanted me to rip my clothes off, you should have just asked.”

Favorite picture/IG post?
One of these 4, I love the TMI movie photos!

Random fact people didn’t know about you:

Lifelong dream?
To meet the TMI cast, become a book publicist or an author, find MY Jace  and (don’t make fun of me…) to go to Comic Con! Also travel to the moon but… I’d rather go to Idris!

$10 Can Change the World!

Sure $10 may not bring world peace or cure the hunger epidemic, but to one person, $10 can change the world. Cassandra Clare recently paired up with the Trevor Project to provide an incentive to the TMI fandom. For those of you who have never heard of the Trevor Project, please follow the link to read more. The short version: the Trevor Project is “The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth.”

Cassandra Clare has been criticized, on more than one occasion, for her decision to portray the relationship between a gay couple (our wonderful Magnus and Alec!). Some people feel that this lessens the credibility of her books, makes them inappropriate for children, and makes them overall, unreadable. These people are close minded and it saddens me. On the other side of the coin, her portrayal of this relationship has also encouraged LBGTQ community members who were afraid to come out of the closet or thought they could never find a loving relationship. It has literally saved the lives of teens. (for real life stories check here)

By donating $10 you can get a sneak-peek snippet of The Bane Chronicles, you are entered to win a copy of ‘City of Bones’ signed by the ENTIRE cast, and most importantly, you can help change the world for someone. We, at Better in Black, encourage you to donate to this amazing organization. Your donation is tax deductible and, if you donate before the Cassandra reaches her goal, and send us/post proof of payment, you will be entered to win a rune decal from Booki Graphics! Please reach down in your heart and help make a difference!
